Taking its name from Mozart’s famous sacred aria, Et incarnatus est, Made Human showcases Emily White’s astonishing ability to make the trombone sound like the human voice. Each song on the album was arranged for trombone and piano by Emily herself, and the CD booklet includes all of the song texts, reflecting Emily’s passion for bringing human language to life through her playing. Supported bypianist Sam Haywood’s sensitivity and intelligence, and beautifully captured by recording engineer Matt Wadsworth’s sense of sonic warmth, this performance does what the best song recitals do: communicate some essence of the human experience.
Emily White is professor of sackbut and trombone at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, sackbut and trombone tutor at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and trombone teacher at Wells Cathedral School. She enjoys both contemporary and early music and works in both fields. Her first solo disc, A Cry Was Heard (hailed as ‘art of the highest order’ by The Trombonist) was released with Deux-Elles in 2022 and features her own composition. With her trio, Pandoras Box, Emily has taken improvisatory programmes across the UK, Europe and the USA. Emily is a member of Il Giardino Armonico and The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble (ECSE), and frequently performs with Alte Musik Berlin, B’Rockand Les Talens Lyrique.
