de ce souvenir toujours: the lute music of Andreas Bohr von Bohrenfels (DXL 1234)

Description

This is an absolutely beautiful recording by German lutenist Tobias Tietze, whose rare blend of consummate musicianship with careful scholarship is supported here by conscientious instrument restoration and curation. The project centres on a hitherto-ignored manuscript of music in the hand of lutenist and paedagogue Andres Bohr von Bohrenfels (1663-1728), for some of whichTobias makes a convincing case for Bohr as not only the copyist but also the composer. Due to the delicate nature of the lute, most original instruments are not in playable condition, and it is therefore rare that we havethe chance to hear an original lute from the 17th century, strung in gut. The textured warmth of the resulting sound is sensitively captured by sound engineer Matthew Wadsworth, drawing on his own parallel career as a lutenist.
