This is an absolutely beautiful recording by German lutenist Tobias Tietze, whose rare blend of consummate musicianship with careful scholarship is supported here by conscientious instrument restoration and curation. The project centres on a hitherto-ignored manuscript of music in the hand of lutenist and paedagogue Andreas Bohr von Bohrenfels (1663-1728), for some of which Tobias makes a convincing case for Bohr as not only the copyist but also the composer. Due to the delicate nature of the lute, most original instruments are not in playable condition, and it is therefore rare that we have the chance to hear an original lute from the 17th century, strung in gut. The textured warmth of the resulting sound is sensitively captured by sound engineer Matthew Wadsworth, drawing on his own parallel career as a lutenist.

Tobias Tietze is a lutenist specialising in the music of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He has performed at international festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, and the York Early Music Festival, and is a regular guest with renowned ensembles including Weser-Renaissance Bremen and Vox Luminis. He is also active in operatic contexts, including engagements at the Hamburg State Opera and the Stuttgart State Theatre. His focus in lute repertoire lies in the French tradition of the seventeenth century and its continuation in the German-speaking regions. In order to ground his artistic approach in historical sources, he conducts intensive research and has been regularly publishing in this field since 2020.

As a soloist, he won second prize at the 2024 tOFEM Solo Lute Competition in Norfolk, England, and in May 2025 the Aumann Prize for discovery and innovative interpretation of Baroque music at the International H. I. F. Biber Competition in Linz, Austria. In addition to participating in some fifteen CD recordings of chamber music and large-scale works, he recorded his first solo album in November 2021, featuring the world premiere recordings of lute music by Valentin Strobel, released in April 2022.
