Philippe Gaubert enjoyed a glittering career as one of France’s leading flautists of the early C20th. He composed throughout his life and is perhaps best known for his flute sonatas, performed here with masterful technique by Kathryn Thomas who captures the delicate essence of the genre to great effect.
The Trios on this recording for flute, piano and cello (with Phoebe Scott) are beautiful examples of impressionism in music. They portray glimpses of the composer’s idyllic rural vision spiced with an unstoppable joie de vivre.
Some composers reveal little of their personality in the music they write but this is not the case with Gaubert. The music for flute shows him to be charming, passionate and poetic in turns.
“full of Gallic charm which is well conveyed in these accomplished performances.”
Classic FM Magazine, January 2001.“A CD to be possessed on all counts.”
Pan Magazine, June 2001“This very rich combination of instruments is one of the highlights of the CD. The energy, lyrcism, and conviction of all three players brings out the very best in these two delightful compositions. All in all, a beautiful CD.”
